Settled by Celts around 600 BC, Milan is a major city in northern Italy. A major fashion capital, along with New York City and Paris, Milan is home to Armani, Versace, and Prada. Considered Italy’s economic-financial capital, Milan is also known for its shopping, housing the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, which is thought to be the oldest shopping center in the world. Some points of interest in Milan are the Pirelli Tower (Italy’s tallest skyscraper), Castello Sforzesco, and the La Scala Theater, one of the world’s premier opera houses. Milan has an estimated population of 1.3 million residents. (Add picture)

I'm not a big fan. I've heard it called the NYC of Italy but, NYC is way better and so are the people.

Not a lot to see or do, difficult to even find a decent restaurant or pub. The black street sellars are offensive and threatening and the illegal immigrants who aggresively beg with their small children on the undergound are extremely disconerting. Runined by its immigrants rather than the locals, who were warm. Maybe its more appealing in the summer, cathedral is unmissable tho and the san siro worth a visit.

From the way this thing was set up, you'd think that Europe was Italy. You have completely insignificant Italian one-horse towns listed here. Come on. Milan is vastly overrated on this board. It's awful.

There a just a couple of cultural attractions in Milan, namely, the La Scala opera, the Duomo, and the Castello Sforzesco (which I found somewhat disappointing). Milan is basically a business center. Interestingly, and amusingly, other Italians (mainly southerners) refer to the Milanese as Germans and think that their salutation of Buon Lavoro (Good work) rather than Buon Giorno (or Good day) is evidence of some kind of obsessive work-oriented character defect. Speaking of southern Italians, there are plenty of them working in Milan, which is why I suspect that sperryc and Munson had such good ravili and lasagna (typically southern Italian dishes - the Milanese are much more into rice dishes and veal dishes, i.e., risotto alla Milanese and cotoletta alla Milanese, known in Austria as Wiener Schnitzel!). Don't spend more than a coule of days there; go to the Italian lakes, which aren't too far from Milan.

I've never had better ravioli than in Milan. Definitely go there and bring your appetite.

If your time in Italy is limited, you can leave Milan off of your list. I wasn't overly impressed (although I did get the best Lasagna of my life there). It is a major city, but there aren't a ton of things for the tourist to do.
