Zimmerman has unfairly been made the goat in this incident. I have read accounts which suggest Zimmerman in a moment of panicked stupidity chased Collins across the plate instead of throwing to the catcher for the out.

What in fact happened, according to game accounts in the newspapers of the day, was that the plate had been left uncovered, and Zimmerman had no choice but to attempt to catch the much faster Collins and prevent the run.

What happened was that there was a serious miscommunication on that play. Everyone forgot to cover home. So, Zimmerman,who was playing third base, had to chase the much faster Eddie Collins home and Collins scored easily, which led to a White Sox victory.
