Calcutta is the capital of West Bengal, a state in the north east of India. Once the most populous region in India, Calcutta is now third with an estimated population of 15 million people. Situated on the Hoogli River, Calcutta is now named Kolkata, a change that took place in 2001. Calcutta is home to India’s Nation Library as well as many palaces and temples in India thus giving the city the nickname the “city of palaces.”
