Best supporting actor most of the time. With his looks it's a wonder he ever became an actor. I always enjoyed his work.

An incredibly versatile actor, that could and did steal scenes from other leading men. He acted in any and every genre, and was often cast as a bad guy early on in such movies as "King Creole" and "The Kentuckian", or as the "good" bad guy in "Charley Varrick". He found his greatest roles, the roles that would define him, later in life, in comedies like the "The Odd Couple" and "The Grumpy Old Men" series. His greatest co-star and friend was Jack Lemmon. Just by coincidence I happened to be in San Francisco in 1973 and saw him do a scene from "The Laughing Policeman". One of Hollywoods greatest actor.

I would say Walter Matthau is a star behind Jack Lemmon, as his acting isn't as great, but he does have his place in Holly wood I guess. I just always hated that scowl, it made me feel uncomfortable to watch his films..yuck... ~kolby

This was another wonderful actor that I shall truly miss. I enjoyed the movies he was in, such as Grumpy old men and the odd couple.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Matthau's death in 2000. He was a very gifted actor. I'll never forget his classic performances in "The Odd Couple", "Grumpy Old Men" and "Out to Sea". He and Lemmon had such chemistry on screen- it was quite phenominal. Things will not be the same with him gone.

I will always remember Walter Matthau as the grouchy sourpuss. I usually saw him in movies with Jack Lemmon. Walter Matthau was a good actor. I liked him in the Odd Couple as the sloppy Oscar Madison, Most of his characters were similar, Grumpy, Not too good with patience, etc. yet usually his characters also had a soft side to that grumpyness.

Walter Matthau will be remembered as one of the best actors of our time. His style fell into the slightly cantankerous but lovable man next door type and he played these parts realistically and with an instinctive talent that morphed him into his character. He really seemed to become his characters and never seemed exactly the same in each role. His Oscar Madison was so believable the viewer bought him totally as the cleanliness-challenged sports writer. His brilliant portrayal as George Burns' sidekick in The Sunshine Boys convinced the viewer he really must have been in vaudeville. His Grumpy Old Man films with Jack Lemmon were a lesson in perfect chemistry. His understated demeanor coupled with Jack Lemmon's high strung style really hit the mark. Matthau, along with other greats such as Lemmon and Burns, were so talented their performances sometimes seemed almost mystical. Now all three have passed away. It makes one wonder if they are playing to rave reviews somewhere up in heaven.....

I met Walter Matthau when he was making "The Kentuckian." He wondered then what a New York Jew was doing making this frontier film. I often asked myself that question while watching his later movies. He honed the part of the grumpy, old man. He played the consumate Easterner, a New York Jew! Only in "Fail Safe" did I see him play a part that was a stretch. He was adequate in what he did, but didn't try to make himself a more diverse actor.

I thought all his movies were great entertainment.
