This City is a great amalgam of the medieval world and modern outlook. A living collection of Art and architecture; it is a magnificent place to discover on foot. Picturesque valley mountains surround this fast growing city with silver shining Himalayas at its norther frontier. A clear sunny morning, incense smell from prayer offerings done at thousands of temples/status and stupas; tranquil music echoing from Thamel; cannabis dotting in the least imagined place - this really is a first potion that you need to imbibe before before you take on the Mighty Magnificient Nepal.

What are you kidding me? Kathmandu is a joke. It is a dumpy as India. There is nothing "mystical or majestic" about the place. I was there on business during the riots because of the killings of the Royal family. People were not very wonderful then. If you go make sure the Moaist rebels don't shoot you. Just because you have been to a place dosen't make it wonderful. Yes, get a window seat when you fly out., That way when the pilot smashes the plane into the mountain you can see it coming.

"Take me back to Kathmandu" ... a place like no other and one that relies on tourism for alot of it's income so go if you can. As long as there are no travel advisories, get there if you like wonderful people, good food, awesome temples and architecture and of course, a few hours bus ride to the majestic Himalayas. Accommodation is abundant and cheap and this is the place to start a trek you'll never forget. I did the Langtang trek in 2000 and will take my wife to do Annapurna in the next couple years. And get a window seat as you fly into or out of Kathmandu, the pilot will point out Everest.
