Nice, clean city. But what more can you do on a small island city?

Very clean, very safe, very excellent food. Really not a whole lot to do there, but still one of the best places in Asia (outside of Japan).

I loved Singapore. It is absolutely gorgeous. I had never heard of pink dolphins before, but I actually got to see them in Singapore. They're not entirely pink, but there underbelly and a portion of their snout are pink. Gorgeous. It is incredibly clean, but of course there are punishments if you litter, beyond getting a fine. I believe you have to walk around with one of those advertising signs hung over your body telling everyone you are a litterbug. This was probably the only thing I didn't like about Singapore. There are laws for everything. You can't even chew gum there. They don't even sell it! If I remember correctly, during my lesson in the rules and laws of Singapore, chewing gum was banned when the people got tired of people placing their used gum on the seats in the buses, subways, etc. While I was there, a man from Australia was actually hanged, within a very short period of time...maybe within a few weeks of his arrival in the country, for having less than an ounce of cocaine either on him or in one of his bags. Singapore means business when it comes to their laws, so if you are planning a trip, definitely bring a camera for the beautiful sites, but also make sure you find out about their laws. What's permissible in the US or may be a misdemeanor where you live, will probably be alot more serious in Singapore.

The place is nice 'cause they'll cane you twice. I know because they gave us a big speech about the things they will cane you for before they let us off the ship.

Singapore is a beautiful city, very clean and efficient. It is sometimes referred to as the garden city, and indeed plants are just bursting out everywhere, snaking over the highway overpasses, sprouting out of other plants, shooting up from cracks in the pavement. There are also many recreational parks - try out the MacRitchie reservoir, for instance, to do some rainforest hiking close to the city, with Macaque monkeys scampering across your path. As a former British colony, English is pretty much universally understood, although the Singapore dialect (aka Singlish) takes a bit of getting used to, as it is peppered with words from Malay and Mandarin and often delivered in a rat-a-tat fashion which leaves you scrambling to decipher what was just said in order to keep up with the conversation. The ethnic mix is primarily Chinese, with a large number of (indigenous) Malay and some Indian. The food is fantastic and cheap. Alcohol and nicotine are heavily taxed. Illegal drugs? - you had better watch out that you don't get caught. They take drug trafficking very seriously and people are regularly executed for this offense. Actually, law enforcement is pretty heavy handed in general here, and police officers are very energetic in imposing fines for this, that and the other. If you enjoy chewing gum while perusing your favourite pornographic magazine, you may want to plan your vacation elsewhere as both are illegal here. Also, they do cane people for certain offenses. Land of the free it ain't, but when you are in some of the parks or on the water, you might think you are in paradise.

We enjoyed Singapore when we were there in February 2005. Of course, it was Chinese New Year so we saw all the decorations in Chinatown and several lion dances which we just happened upon as we were walking about. Some former students of ours and their parents took us to the Night Safari at the zoo which was quite interesting. We also enjoyed walking on the waterfront and in the parks near the waterfront.

Like one big shopping mall. Just as advertised about the cuisine there, too - the best in Asia ... cheap, moderate, expensive ... it's all good. A reliable train route that circles the city/nation makes getting around a breeze. Also, it doesn't matter when you visit. It will be humid and rainy whenever you arrive. Be prepared to sweat!

Singapore is clean, safe, in-order. but since it's so small, people will easily get bored. not recommended for eldery, as the living pace is so fast.

Deadiningly boring. Totally sterile, and nothing to do except shop. Save your time and money- go to Thailand.

Lack of culture and things to do. Westernized city.

Singapore is clean and has some great skyscrapers. Singaporeans pride themselves on their great city but I must admit, if you could call a city anally retentive, then Singapore would suit the bill. No fun.

Yeah, yeah, nice food, lots of shops, but soooo dull. Like an overgrown boyscout camp, all the citizenry shouting "We'll DOB DOB DOB DOB" to the Lee Kuan Yew (or his subsequent clone) exhortation "DYB DYB DYB DYB!". Have they given up on that fascist eugenic stuff yet?

You should definitely visit Singapore. It's clean and beautiful. The food is marvelous. Don't forget to visit the food centers, such as Newton and Tiong Bahru. These places are one-of-a-kind. Oh yeah.. be sure to watch the rules there. Singapore is really strict. If you made a mistake, they'll fine you big time!! It's afterall a FINE city. :P
