An interesting mix of the old, the new and the very new! We just happened upon the changing of the guard at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial and were totally fascinated. A "must see" is the National Palace Museum which houses all the artifacts rescued (taken?) from mainland China by Chang Kai Shek's retreating army.

The reviewer who says its the cleanest place ever...have you been here? Anyone who has lived or visited Taipei will agree some places seem fairly clean but some places are just dirty. The air is never clean...unless you go to the mountains. Food is everywhere, good and cheap. My favorite places in Taipei are Shi Lin nightmarket, Hsi Men ding and Snake Alley area...the people there are kind of weird though. The people are generally nice but I have seen some violence from a gang before. It has all the problems of a modern city but they are much smaller than most cities. The mayor Ma Ying Jeou has really improved Taipei. You have to look to see the true beauty of Taipei, people who says its just a boring dirty place aren't looking hard enough.

Not much to do, however still interesting to wander around for a day or two. Not exactly a good vacation destination, but as a layover it's ok.

The Communists of Mainland China destroyed their great nation's culture. Beijing actually boasts very few temples and old buildings, and religious Chinese culture there is nonexistent. Taiwan buzzes with activity-- religious freedom, political freedom, temples in every back alley, rowdy political rallies, and freewheeling nightlife. Taiwan is a must-visit for anyone wanting to get a real taste of Chinese culture.

I live in Taipei all my life. It's not the best place on earth, but I'll give it a five star not only because it's where I call home, but also because it is improving. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT, fancy name for our subway) is really clean and convenient. It'll get you anywhere in Taipei in combination with the bus system. However, I admit it is really difficult for foreigners who don't understand Mandarin to get around Taipei. The tourism is just at the beginning stage, and I am opmistic to see improvements in the future.
