Yokohama was founded in 1889 and is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture. Yokohama began as a small fishing village but grew to become Japan’s 1st trading port and its largest seaport. Yokohama is also the site of Japan’s first railway, which connected the city to Tokyo. Over its history, Yokohama was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, and was a site of American occupation in WWII. Yokohama has an estimated population of 3.5 million people.
