Ive lived in NZ my whole life, and have lived in Auckland the past 3. Im from Wellington, which is a far nicer city to live in. Aucklanders can be quite rude, the transport is horrendous and the cost of living (not to mention real estate) is extremely high! It's also quite a seperated city. Withough myself sounding racist, as I most certainly am not, I'd like to point out a few things about Aucklands reigons and the people. South Auckland is mainly poor Islander/Maori/Indian families, and drug use is steriotypically common. Crime rate there is relatively high, a friend of mine spent 1 night in Otara, and in the morning awoke to find her car was stolen. East Auckland is very expensive, and exclusive with the high majority of the population being rich caucasians and/or asians. West Auckland is seen as the "bogan" place to be, it's nice, realitively cheap but like South there is a high rate of crime, and a strong Maori population. The North Shore is cheaper than East, but a lot higher than the other regions. It once again is full of asian immigrants and rich/poor "whities." Don't get me wrong, I don't exactly hate Auckland, it has some amazing scenery and the music scene's not too bad, if a little cliche.
Wellington is a lot nicer, the people are nicer and the cost of living (rates...food...rent etc) is a lot less. Its also very pretty!

I dearly love New Zealand and would like to move there (Whangarai, Wellington, or Christ Church but not Auckland). Getting around Auckland is the worst. The taxis are expensive and public transport is slow and difficult. I was staying at a hotel near the airport with my daughter and getting from there to the aquarium and back was all all-day effort. Maybe if I knew the city better would have helped but when I mention this to a Kiwi, they all seem to knowingly nod. My advise is: Pay the extra money to stay at a hotel that is convenient to downtown (they have a free loop bus there).

Couldn't live anywhere else in NZ. Plenty of interesting places to visit in town, pretty views of the harbour/s, out west there are the Waitakere Ranges covered in native bush and surf beaches when you get out to the coast. Further north there's countryside and wineries towards Kumeu, and there are nice beaches around Orewa and the North Shore. Largest city in New Zealand, abounding in friendly jafas (a rude national joke. The rest of the country's just jealous ^__^).

A nice city. Kind of reminded me of Vancouver, B.C.

New Zealand has many amazing touriust destinations. Unfortunately Auckland is not one of them. A nice, pleasent city, but that is about all one can say about it. Pretty much what you'd expect of a city of roughly a million. Just imagine a miniature Sydney.

Its a nice enough city. Has a stunning setting and all the usual basics that you'll find in any major city. But nothing mindblowing. Makes a good base from where to explore the rest of the North Island.

NZ's kinda a hole...trust me I live in auckland! It's a pretty nice place for tourists and it's also prtty safe. It's just not the most interesting city to live in.

An excellent, open city. Wonderful harbour trips, good food, friendly people.
