As an American i have toured all over Aus, i would say Sydney and Melbourne are very similiar not as clear skies, over crowded, over hyped, fast paced, and over priced. The East coast i found to be slower less urgency, clearer skies, less traffic, not as crowded more things to do and generally a better feel to it, i found the people to be more freindly how ever the Gold coast i found to be very touristy all in all Brisbane was the nicest city i have been to in aus for a varity of reasons one of which was the sheer ammount of things to do and im a fan of parks.

I have had friends say that Melbourne is better to visit than Sydney. There is a lot to do there and is a very cultured city.

Nice place to visit

This is a very nice city to visit and does not have the oppressive hot Australia climate of so many other places down under. The Aussies built a Dingo fence in the 1880's to protect southeast Austrlalia from the ravages of that voracious carnivore, and Melbourne does not have a dingo problem. Few babies are stolen there, as I understand it.

This is my city. I am not ashamed to admit I love it. It is cosmopolitan, eclectic, and most importantly, safe. Just be aware, Melbournians have a long held rivalry against Sydney. You will get a strong rebuttal from almost any Melbournian if you say you prefer Sydney.

Positively amazing! A city that not many people in the world know about which would have to be amongst (if not the!) the worlds cleanest, most pleasant, stylish and well fed. And somehow the people have time to be friendly. This city could teach almost every other city in the world a thing or two about mixing different cultures too. The locals do seem rather obsessive about their football though.

Sometimes miserable weather, but the excitement of Melbourne completely outweighs its only negative aspect. What a beautiful city.

Australia's best shopping, cuisine and nightlife. Lots of parks and beautiful gardens. Stunning Victorian architecture and thrusting skyscrapers. Lots of vibrant urban neighborhoods to get lost in, trendy bayside beaches and an exciting cultural and sporting calendar. What more could you want in a city?

Melbourne is an amalgam of everything good you'll find in many US and European cities. Great public transport in many forms, and the shopping and food is world class. There is beautiful old architecture set amongst some of the worlds biggest and most striking modern skyscrapers. The people are cosmopolitan (Melbourne has the biggest Greek population of any city except Athens) and friendly, and unlike much of Australia, Melbourne actually has seasons! Don't forget the coffee, which is better than world class!

I spend a lot of time in both Sydney and Melbourne. Melbourne has been called the Worlds most liveable city and I can really see why.The best restaurants in Australia are here. Also great parks and places to hang out. Sydney needs to clean up a bit and get rid of the people on the north shore.

Loved it. I had a blast there and would go back in a second. I liked it much better than Sydney due to the all the construction for the Olympics.

Melbourne is a city that has it all. If you're bored in Melbourne you'd be bored anywhere. From it's abundance of resturants in every known cuisine to comedy clubs galore and finally access to some of the great Australian bands performing live.

Too sure of themselves, I prefer Adelaide, Perth or Brisbane. Too dirty, too kitsch.
