Suva is the capital of Fiji, located on the southeastern portion of the Island of Viti Levu. Suva became Fiji’s capital in 1877 in place of the European settlement Levuka, and is Fiji’s commercial and political center. Suva has the distinction of being the largest city in the South Pacific, excluding those in Australia and New Zealand. Suva is also noted for the high-volume of rainfall it experiences on a yearly basis. Suva is Fiji’s main port, and is home to the Reserve Bank of Fiji, currently the tallest building in the country. The estimated population of Suva is 141,000.
