Tongatapu is largest island in a series of islands along the southern portion of the Kingdom of Tonga. Tongatapu is home to Tonga’s governing body. Evidence shows that Tongatapu may have been settled as early as 900 BC, but according to modern history the Dutch settled the island in 1643. Tongatapu is home to Tonga’s international airport, and is noted for its shipping industry. Tongatapu is also noted for its beaches, specifically Ha’atafu Beach. Tongatapu is also home to the Tongan National Center and the Queen Salote Memorial Hall.
