Upolu is a volcanic island located in Western Samoa. Upolu is the most populous of the Samoan islands, and is noted for its fertile soil, yielding such valuable regional goods and exports as cacao, rubber, bananas, and coconuts. The city of Apia is the region’s capital, its major port, and its major city. Another port on Upolu, Saluafata, maintains a U.S. naval station. The estimated population of Upolu is 200,000 inhabitants.
