Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. Located in the extreme southern region of New Zealand on Port Nicholson, an inlet of the Cook Strait, Wellington has an estimated population of 367, 700 residents. Wellington is a noted communications and transportation center, and its port is noted for coastal and overseas trade. Wellington’s major manufacturing interests are garments, transportation equipment, and textiles. Founded in 1840, Wellington replaced Auckland as New Zealand’s capital city in 1865. Popular sites include the governor-general’s residence, the National Art Gallery and Museum, and the Parliament Building.
