From 1972 to 1979, the WHA competed with the rival NHL. The league eventually merged with the NHL. (Add picture)

Doomed from the start but set many important precedents, the key being the WHA's starting of the influx of Europeans into the game. In reality this league is not completely gone - four franchises joined the NHL. Quebec Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche), Hartford Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes), Winnipeg Jets (now the Phoenix Coyotes) and Edmonton Oilers. oh yeah, sorry X Factor, but outside of New England, Michigan and Minnesota - hockey is nothing more than a novelty that Americans go to to 'watch the fights' - Houston (and Columbus and Nashville and Dallas) don't merit having NHL franchises, certainly not while cities like Hartford and Quebec City go without teams

Gretzky! why the NHL did not add Houston from this league is baffling.. could have used it now with that NHL strike!

I remember the Philadelphia Blazers as one of the original WHA Teams in 1972. They played at the Civic Center (a relic) and had their games aired by the local PBS station. The team didn't win too often, but there was no shortage of excitement as the team had the leading scorer (Andre Lacroix) and Leading Goal scorer (Danny Lawson). The player they signed for big-bucks, Derek Sanderson, scored something like 2 goals. Hall of Fame goalie Bernie Parent also played for the team, but had his toe broken when a slap shot hit the toe of his skate (apparently the Blazers were so broke, the skate had cheap cardboard padding in the toe). Parent would recover nicely and lead our other hockey team The Flyers, to a pair of Stanley Cups. Of course, four WHA teams went to the NHL, but Edmonton has been the only one to not relocate.

Underfinanced, but it wasn't bad hockey at all. It didn't really fold, it got absorbed into the NHL, with 5 or 6 teams becoming NHL franchises. Wayne Gretzky got his professional start in this league, playing most of one season for Indianapolis.
