In college basketball, with the exception of the ceremonial opening tip-off (and start of overtime periods), the jump ball was replaced by the posession arrow in the NCAA in 1981. While the NBA still has jump balls, they eliminated the jump ball to start a period other than the opening period (Red Auerbach claims he persuaded the league to adopt the change because refs couldn't throw the ball straight up.
