In college basketball, with the exception of the ceremonial opening tip-off (and start of overtime periods), the jump ball was replaced by the posession arrow in the NCAA in 1981. While the NBA still has jump balls, they eliminated the jump ball to start a period other than the opening period (Red Auerbach claims he persuaded the league to adopt the change because refs couldn't throw the ball straight up. In actuality, he wanted to neutralize big men like Kareem Abdul Jabbar). (Add picture)

Of course, in the early peach basket days, rumor has it that every time the ball went in the peach basket, it had to be retrieved, with the use of a ladder, and subsequent possession was decided by a jump ball. After every basket. I was playing high school ball when every held ball resulted in a jump ball between the two with their hands on the ball. Some of the match-ups were hillarious.
