The mainstay opponent of the well-known Harlem Globetrotters for years, the Washington Generals were best known for their spectacular win-loss record, estimated at 1-13000. Founded in 1953 by former NBA playerLouis "Red" Klotz, the Generals' only win came in a 1971 game against the Globetrotters, with Klotz scoring the winning basket. The team mercifully disbanded in 1995. (Add picture)

In 1995, the New York Nationals replaced the Generals as the Harlem Globetrotters Stooge Team (They are winless, I believe). Incredibly, Red Klotz coached the Generals in 1953 and still coaches the Generals today. I saw Klotz play c. 1970 (so he would have been in his late '40s though he looked a lot older). Klotz looked like a living fossil with his 30 foot set shots that would still go swish. Klotz, just 5'-7 played for the legendary Philadelphia SPHAS (South Philadelphia Hebrew Association), who in the pre-NBA era of pro basketball were champs 7 out of 13 years. Believe it or not, basketball in the 1930s and 1940s was dominated by Jewish ballplayers in the same manner as African Americans today (I am also convinced that this might have been one of the reasons that Germany did everything they could to ruin the basketball events in the 1936 Berlin Olympics). Klotz was also a member of the NBA champion Baltimore Bullets. So at least Klotz got a taste of winning before taking on the job with the Generals.
