I feel it is unfair to base your experience of Jamaica on Bob Marley's music and 'what happened in Cool Runnings'. But my experience of Jamaica was that it was a really friendly community, which welcomes strangers gladly, and will never cast an unkind word. It is much like an idyllic modern society, enough technology to be prosperous, but the old style community and hobbies are still in place. A fine place to go, I hope I shall return one day.

A country of a mere few million (smaller than most North American cities) has such a cultural presence that it is has been responsible for and/or influenced the likes of Bob Marley, Lee Scratch Perry, Peter Tosh, Colin Powell, Marcus Garvey, Lee-Chin (300th richest person in the world and the Richest black man in the world who resides in Canada) and thousands others. What we call hip-hop or rap would not exist if not for Jamaica. About 70% of hip hop pioneers had Jamaican backgrounds as did those who were behind Miami Bass, dub reggae and jungle music. There would not be The Clash, The Police and other so-called American/UK staple points. The bass sound is a Jamaican obsession. Plus all the universal slang expressions that originated in Jamiaca. Also, jerk chicken, patties, and all the other amazing food from this small island. There is not a place in the world where people will not know of Jamaica and Jamaican style - Love it or Hate it. If North America would just give up on their hypocritical non-sensible 'war on drugs' and just 'legalize it' already and stop exporting their deadly cancer-sticks, Jamaica would be deservingly rich too. Nuff said.

I'm not big on the stupid "ganja" culture. Reggae music bores me too. Rum, however, is a fine beverage.

Two words: Ganga, mon. And what kinda freaky religion is that there Rastafarian mumbo-jumbo? It's a small, rather bland, insignificant nation on the face of the planet. Their economy relies heavily upon tourists from Europe and America (not that real Americans would deign to set foot on that impoverished country, what with all those drugs and Miss Cleo look-alikes). Why do so many of them there Jamaicans come to America? 'Cuz it's the SUPERIOR nation! Montego Bay? Kingston? Puh-leez. Tourist traps to the nth degree. Drug-infested, immoral sorts live there. Hey, remember the Jamaican bobsledders? How moronic and nebbish can you get? AMERICA, BAY-BEE!!!!

The home of Bob Marley and Patrick Ewing. It is a 3rd world country with extreme poverty, but is presumably a nice place to visit. Marley came up from the Jamaican ghettos and became the spokesman for their population.

for college students Jamaica could offer a cheap vacation unlike the Bahamas.
