Amazon.com's review of "Letter From an Unknown Woman": "By the time you read this letter, I may be dead," reads aging bon vivant Louis Jourdan from a letter found in his tiny hotel room. With tousled hair and a tux tired from yet another night of meaningless flirtation, he's startled by these opening lines and suspends his preparations to flee a duel in order to read the history of a love affair that he can't remember. For the rest of the film we're transported to the life of Joan Fontaine's awkward young Viennese woman, who has been hopelessly enthralled by the dashing pianist ever since adolescence. For a moment she was his lover, the emotional pinnacle of her life but for the philandering rogue simply another fling in a blur of women passing through his bedroom. (Add picture)

An unjustly neglected classic directed by Max Ophuls. One of the many good thing about this picture is the astonishing storyline, which is a bit like the Cyrano de Bergerac story, but more engrossing, maybe because the gender roles are reversed. It concerns a woman who has sustained a lifelong passion for a pianist, though she's waited to disclose this information until they are both on the point of death. Though Letter from an Unknown Woman was neglected for a long time because it was considered the quintessential "woman's picture," male viewers are beginning to warm to its nuances. It's nothing like the romantic comedy formulas produced in Hollywood these days. A must-see.

This is an remarkable film in every way...it is Max Ophul's summit of his American career. It is also one of the most tragic romatic films ever with superb performances by Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. Everyone connected with the film deserves the highest of praise.

Quite simply the most beautiful movie ever! The acting by the two stars is first class, the sets and photography are spellbinding and the story, while tragic, is nonetheless one of the best romantic stories ever.

What seems to be a rather simple film turns out to be very complex with nuances one does not catch on the initial viewing. Scholars have studied and written about this film directed by Max Ophuls and agree it is probably the best woman's picture ever to come out of Hollywood, though most people think it is an European film rather than American. Joan Fontaine gives a stunning performance as Lisa and Louis Jourdan is equally fine as Stefan. It is one of Amazon.coms essential films.

The two stars in this classic story of unrequited love are terrific...never were they better than in this film. Joan Fontaine is the hopelessly in love woman with Louis Jourdan, a true cad and ladies' man. The film has its intensely romantic moments but the end result is one of great sacrifice and tragedy. Max Ophuls direction is excellent.

Magnificent in every way. The acting by Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan is awesome, the story, the photography, the sets, the music...everything in this romantic, yet tragic film is not to be forgotten once seen.
