I really like Cabo San Lucas. It's touristy, but not nearly on the same scale as Cancun. The rock formation at the end of the beach makes it visually stunning. When I went, I stayed in a place that I rented off of
VRBO, and it was perfect. You do have to be careful going in the water, as some of the beaches have nasty undertows.
Unless you're staying downtown, it's probably a good idea to rent a car. It will give you the flexibility of checking out different beaches, going to the supermarket, etc.
If you're looking to have a cultural Mexico experience, there are plenty of better places to go than Cabo. But if you're looking for gorgeous, hot, dry weather and ruggedly pretty beaches, you won't go wrong with Cabo. For those of us on the West Coast, it's under a three hour flight as well.
