Cozumel is a Mexican resort island off the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Cozumel is the largest Mexican island, a municipality of the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is famed for its beaches and coral reef. The coral reef of Cozumel was made a national park in 1996. Originally inhabited by the Mayans, Cozumel’s colonial settlement began sometime after the arrival of Hernan Cortes in 1519. Cozumel is a popular cruise port area, and is one of the most popular scuba diving regions in the world. The estimated population of the Cozumel region is 90,000 residents.
