Love this town! Have had many occasions to visit...cruise days and multiple week stays. There is such a great variety of activities for tourists, good food and a vibrant local scene. Like anywhere in Mexico, there are negatives to be found but overall you can't beat it. Have really learned to love the old town area near Playa de los Muertos. Also really easy to get around in--either by taxi that won't cost you an arm and a leg since most places to stay are relatively close, or via the bus system which is always an adventure in Mex. There are some great new resorts north of town in Nuevo Vallarta but for my $$ you can't beat staying closer in.

I was there the last week in July & it was amazing! I loved it. It was really hot, but being from TX, it was just like home, the atmosphere was great, the food, the people. Oh but there were TONS of jellyfish in the water & no one had warned me!!! I'm not sure what the secret is to not getting stung, cause there were plenty of people enjoying themselfs on the beaches. Way better than Cancun.

We have visited PV many times. The first time was in 1980 when we camped for two months in our motorhome on Mismaloya beach. (At that time we were on a ten-month trip around North American with our two young daughters.) Sadly, that beach is now totally taken over by a big hotel. We also lived with our nine-year-old daughter in an apartment a block from the beach in the town of Bucerias north of PV for three months in the winter of 1984. Now when we go we try to stay in one of the Mexican style hotels in the old area south of the river. The price is right and the ambience priceless.

Puerto Vallarta Getaway Club Resort: I would never return to this hell hole. This place was a huge disappointment. To say that it was not what I expected would be a huge understatement. It was worse than I could ever imagine. It’s a one star hotel that somehow mysteriously got a 4 star rating. Everything about this place was horrible. The rooms were disgustingly dirty and we were forced to move four times. The beach was filthy and rocky. The food wasn’t exactly delicious either. We were bored to death at this resort, since they didn’t bother with entertainment. My vacation was ruined and I would never return to this resort even if they paid me. I love Puerto Vallarta. I recommend the old town section, rather than the touristy northern section or "Nueva Vallarta." Here is authentic Mexican culture, but with plenty of things to do and see, also great beaches. Very friendly to visitors.

My favorite of the big Mexico beach destinations. The best thing about Puerto Vallarta is that the division between the town and tourist zone is not so defined as in other places, such as Cancun. You can stay at a cool little hotel right in the middle of town and watch tourist and locals co-exist.
