I spent about a month in Quepos in October / November 2005. Simply adored it. I stayed in Quepos but bussed (20 cents each way) to Manuel Antonio often in the days. I began with a decent room at Mary's Guest Home for $10.00 a night, moved down the street to a nicer place for $12.00 a night with a refrigerator in my room (both had private toilet and cold water shower), and ended up for a few weeks at Hotel Sanchez for $15.00 a night with color TV with full cable, private bath and refrigerator. There were several internet places in the town and many very inexpensive restaurants -- supurb fresh fish meals, full meals, for $5.00. Awesome. Bob Corbett corbetre@webster.edu

Stay in Quepos for cheaper housing, but be careful at night. The national park at the point of Manual Antonio is Costa Rica's smallest and most famous. Please dont feed the monkies. :-) Make sure you do a canopy tour at least once in the country, I recomend Mal Pais over Manuel Antonio, but you'll want to rent a car. Go into Quepos one evening for icecream by the local soccer field and watch a game. Buses run regularly (every 30mins) between the MA and the central Quepos bustop.

This could be where I want to live someday. It is still not a developed Central American town (no traffic lights), but it still has most of the 'necessities' for an American to get by with. Beautiful setting, lots of activities to do, the beach is perfect, locals are friendly and not cavalier towards tourists and the cost of living is relatively low. It is only a short 20 minute scary plane ride from the capitol city of San Jose.

Go to this place. Cool, funky, laid back, nice mix of traveler hub, and cool little Central American town. Nice beginning surfing, a cool national park, some fun little bars, nice places to stay, very very cheap - one of my favorite places.
