San Miguel de Allende is located in Mexico’s Guanajuato state. San Miguel de Allende is in the baijo region, a flat region at an elevation of 7,000 ft, surrounded by mountains. The city was founded as San Miguel el Grande in 1542, but changed its name to San Miguel de Allende in 1826 in honor of General Ignacio Allende, a native son, who fought against the Spanish during the Mexican War for Independence. After WWII San Miguel de Allende became a popular tourist destination, noted for its Spanish colonial architecture and its thermal springs, and many US GI’s used their education grants at San Miguel de Allende’s newly constructed art school, Instituto Allende (1950).
