A doomed league that the players formed themselves in opposition to the salary cap of the time imposed by owners. It only lasted one season, though many of the greatest players of the time did indeed play in it. There was three major leagues during that year, and the quality of play suffered as a result, but the N.L. was the best prepared to weather the financial hit that resulted from having too many teams around, and by 1892 it was the sole major league.
