I don't know about you but I can't think of the 80' and 90's music without Phil Collins. "In The Air Tonight" is a top 10 song for the entire decade of the 80's. A great musician also.

some great early solo stuff but the third album really made him popular and for all the wriong reasons. I HATE Sussudio.

For better or worse, Collins defined the sound of the 80s and no more so then on his definitive hit In the Air Tonight. Still he should be recognized first in genesis and plus after his first two albums he got too sappy at times especially for the HOF.
MapleRock 05/26/2008
he was good until Sussudio and is so full of himself now

yes id put phil in the rock hall but after genesis gets in
detroitdiezel 01/31/2008
For all his work in Genesis, Solo material, producing and drumming for people like Robert Plant and Eric Clapton he deserves it. Not to mention, he's one of the most prolific percussionists in music to ever sit behind a drum kit.

can I give negative votes?

A few decent songs ("In The Air Tonight", "Sususudio", "Billy Don't Lose My Number") amidst a large number of terribel radio hits that I disliked even when I listened obsessively to commercial music of the eighties. Now that I've gone beyond that to read Joe S. Harrington, there shoul be no one wanting him in the Hall any more.
zemongoose 06/23/2007
Pros: He's an excellent drummer. Face Value was a decent album despite being overplayed. Cons: Phil Collins is the Anti-Christ

When he did In The Air Tonight you know he would be a big hit. doing the music with Genesis and his solo are both dam good to me. He made a lot of great pop hits and a lot of people I know like his stuff. I got two of my friends hooked on his music. he rocks and deserves to go into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
southparker9 07/16/2006
I can't see him getting in right away. I think that Genesis will make it before him, even though he helped them commercially. He has a very big catalogue of hits. The Disney movie soundtrack Hercules seemed to revitalize people's interest in him. I can't really see him getting in based on his contribution to rock. I can't see him getting in based on the strength of his voice. He doesn't seem to have that distinctive voice that sets him apart like Barry White, Teddy Pendergass, or Tom Waits. He will get in based on his Billboard hits.

BRAND X and FACE VALUE were excellent. But the rest of his solo career has become a joke. Truly a shame.
Habs10 12/02/2005
jacket required to get in.
Djahuti 11/28/2005
Terrible, flabby pop that couldn't pass for Rock n Roll even if it put on leather pants.
candy kane 11/07/2005
His solo work is 100% pop slop

If you have ever seen this man live then you would realise what a fabulous musician and entertainer he is. I have seen many many artists live and the musicianship is up there with the very best. His earlier material had a real mood to it - more than just lyrics strung together with a catchy tune...it had a deeper feeling than that - timeless. Like most things, musicians/bands phase in and out of fashion and people naturally want to follow whats current. In truth, its what the music means to you that really counts! Phil Collins is an extremely successful musician and deserves to be.

Phil is the nicest man ever in the entire music business, & 1 of the nicest in the whole entire world & universe!!! & he's most definitely deserved of being entered into The Rock `N' Roll Hall Of Fame as a solo artist, AND, the same goes for his Great band: Genesis. He was, is, & will always be my most favorite male performer of all time! Cheerio! & Pip-Pip! & keep: a stiff upper lip & your chin up Phil 'my man'. & to all you 'dreamsquashers' & naysayers of the Great man(Phil) I say: Bollocks to you all, you bloody smeggin' sods! ~Signed, Teflon T.

RedWolf1994 07/28/2005
the best drummer and singer of all time!!
framptonlive 07/19/2005
Besides his strong, echoing voice and virtuosity on drums, Phil Collins excels as a songwriter and adds to the mix his showmanship, social awareness (Another Day in Paradise) and sense of humor. I can't think of a more versatile performer. Although he deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he already has something that is cherished far more: an Oscar. So, Hall of Fame electors, if you ever get around to giving Phil his due, please recognize that you're not at the top of the list.
kingguiness 07/13/2005
While he is a great drummer, the music he has made is commercialized fluff. Not just his solo stuff but also his work with Genesis. What is an Abacab anyway?
Philfan6 07/09/2005
I think he is overdue for an honor like this. His career speaks for it self. He is a great example of what hard work and dedication can acheive for any musical artist. Cheers!
OzChick 07/07/2005
Phils Live Aid plane hopping, Princes Trust Work, Homeless work and even his own charity aside.. The guy has been a major influence in the music industry. You get folks like Bob and Ozzy who whinge about the non stop Phil media fest of the eighties..He has produced many albums..he has released top notch albums..hey he will evn have worked on a broadway added to his cv soon..Cmon is not In The Air Tonight a song that will be forever immortalised in history. Fair crack of the whip you Hall of Famer people its hould not be about personal opinion but about musical history.
Leighbee 07/06/2005
There's not a lot else I can add, however if longevity was one of the criteria than Phil is more than deserving. He has managed to maintain a high standard of musicianship over the last 20-30 years without compromising himself or the music.
PhilCollins 07/06/2005
Just great;)!!
JaRoen007 07/06/2005
A man who's been at the top of the music business since the early seventies, sold 100 million albums with Genesis, sold 100 million solo albums, won an oscar, golden globe, a couple of grammy's, who is one of the best drummers on the planet, still manages to sell out 50.000 seat stadiums, score hit singles, and not make it into the hall of fame? You got to be kidding me!!
MNori 07/06/2005
Phil Collins is a world class musician, some of the few who can get commercial exit with quality in pop music. He, Elton John, Sting and Paul McCartney are some of the best. Phil is a great drummer, and a special singer, that makes simply, direct music with great production and creativity. Great tunes, great mood. For me, a genius of pop music. And if you mention his part in Genesis, so, its bad for these so called marketing stars like Oasis, Robbie Williams....
CanadaSucks 07/06/2005
Oh, God no. . .was once a decent drawl but he's strictly 'animation film soundrack' material these days. . .
hogweed 07/06/2005
Phil Collins has been rated by many polls, to be either one of the best or the best drummer in the world. He achieved huge success with Genesis as a drummer first and later as drummer and singer. He first balanced his vocalist/drumming role as a member of Genesis with his side jazz fusion band Brand X. Later, he remained a very active member of Genesis for close to fourteen years while also maintaining his solo project. At the same time he produced many albums for people like Robert Plant, Adam Ant and Eric Clapton as well as making guest appearances on countless other releases. He is, after all, the man who played two Live Aid shows in one day. To this day, in addition to his solo records, he continues to challenge himself by scoring and writing songs for movies. One of which, in 2000, won him an Oscar for his work on Tarzan!

Just look at all the work this man has put out. He took Genesis to pop stardom as they were struggling with getting their music out there. Long career as a solo artist, Song Writer's Hall of Fame, Grammy Awards, Golden Globes and an Oscar. What could be more deserving?
mollie7777 05/19/2005
Phil Collins is the best drummer, singer and songwriter of all time. He has done (and is still doing) great work and deserves to be place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for all of his solo work and for the work he has done with Genesis.
deves 05/18/2005
Phil, a great drummer and songwriter. His first 3 albums, great his later work not bad. Don't forget his big influence in Genesis and the Jazz-Rock with Brand X.
dogmusher 05/14/2005
Phil Collins is the greatest drummer I've ever heard. I believe he once said I'm just a drummer who does a bit of singing.
miasmom999 05/11/2005
There are just not enough words to describe the talent Phil has blessed us with over the years......I love him!
steveperry 05/10/2005
He was great in genesis, and he was great as a solo artist
journey2006 05/10/2005
Phil Collins is one of the greatest drummers of all-time, he deserves to make it with genesis and as a solo artist.
