ItemImageAs lead guitarist for the Beatles, George Harrison provided the band with a lyrical style of playing in which every note mattered. Harrison was one of millions of young Britons inspired to take up the guitar by British skiffle king Lonnie Donegan's recording of "Rock Island Line." But he had more dedication than most, and with the encouragement of a slightly older school friend — Paul McCartney — he advanced quickly in his technique and command of the instrument. ... He should be inducted immediately. He has written some of the greatest songs of your times.

George Harrison's "Something" and
"Here Comes The Sun" are right
behind McCartney's "Yesterday" in
the Beatles catalogue of 'most-covered'
by other artists. They are also most
played today on 'Classic-Rock' MOR stations. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" along with Harrison's solo
work starting right with the volumuminous 'All Things Must Pass'
and leading right through his
epitaph 'Brainwashed' . . .
had classic songs. Not to forget his
work with Petty, Dylan, etc. in
the Wilbury's. This isn't touching
his side projects.

The plagarism case over "My Sweet Lord" may hold him back in some people's minds, but I just read a history of the case on the net and man what a wicked convaluted tale. George's lawyer Alan Klien was fired by George, then he bought the company that was suing George and used information that he was privy to in order to pursue the suit. No wonder lawyers get such a bad name.

As a member of the Beatles, George was both challenged and overshadowed by the songwriting prowess of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. His heartfelt lyricism is brilliant and unique among his peers (both within the Beatles and beyond). His talent, nurtured in the presence of such example, grew into its own and blossmed, yet was not always recognized because of that same presence. Once George realized his own ability, had he been anywhere else in the music world (rather than in a band with Lennon & McCartney), there would be no question regarding his inclusion in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Terribly underrated, he's certainly one of the most influential songwriters of our time. His west-east vision changed the whole world.
