05/15/2005 |  Although this item is not the definitive hallmark of a conservative, it is (or should be) one of the priority issues for conservatives. I'd like to expand on this question just a bit - I believe that a conservative believes that, in tandem with low taxes, the taxing authorities (i.e., the government, at whatever level), should also practice fiscal restraint when it comes to spending. I hate to say it, but I think that this administration has it only half-right - it pushes for lower taxes, but it really needs to get its act together when it comes to restraining excessive or unnecessary spending. At least the liberals/Democrats tax us enough to be able to spend like profligate spendthrifts - not that I think that high taxes are desirable, but at least deficits don't seem to be as much of a problem when taxes are high. Pretty much by definition, a conservative believes in saving (be it money, heritage, old buildings, whatever - the Latin word for to save is conservare). So, it's not just about low taxes, but using the tax revenue wisely and prudently that makes a true conservative.

05/13/2005 | For those Americans who make an honest living, who work hard for their money, who break their backs so they can feed their families, who want to give their children a life better than they experinced...the conservative approach on taxes is most likely for you. Your the one who earned your paycheck- it's YOUR money, not the millionaire senators in his $1600 suit who thinks a bad day is when there's too much sun out on the golf course.

05/12/2005 | Keyensian economics baby. The theory is when you tax lower people have more money. Therefore they spend more money putting it into the economy therefore generating more money which generates more tax because people make more. Really it's a brilliant plan. The high tax plan is quick fix, the low tax plan is a long term solution. Heck yes. Consevatives believe that taxes are nessecary for a well functioning government, however, the government should allow the people to keep as much money as possible. After all, it is their money.

05/12/2005 | Well said Louie. Of course your point doesn't apply in any way to our current administration. In fact, we have never had a federal government spend our money as aggressively and indiscriminately as George W. Bush, the Republican House, and the Republican Senate. When you say A liberal does not think that people are smart enough to spend their money wisely and wants the government to do it for ya... I think what you meant is Proponents of big government are by definition, spending your money indiscriminately. George W. Bush is not only spending our current money for us, but he is digging aggressively into our FUTURE earnings. A tax cut accompanied by ballooning spending is not a tax cut. It is the creation of massive future taxes. And to that Louie, I couldn't agree more. Well said.
