Yes, conservatives defend tradition that is grounded in the moral principles that are rationally understood from the existential world. However, conservatives can support radical changes when existing institutions violate those moral principles. Abortion is an existing institution and multi-billion dollar business but abhored by real conservative who would support its outright ban. Slavery was opposed by Christians moralists. Judicial supremacy is a commonly accepted tradition though many conservatives would support a constitutional amendment to force jurists to stick to the original intent of the law. Conservatives simply view the universe and human nature a particular way. In most cases our naturally formed institutions reflect conservative sensibilities and are simply augmented by small changes over time in light of various other competing principles but that doesn't mean conservatives defend every existing institution.
