 | GenghisTheHun (168) 07/06/2006 | I, for one, am sorry that the Brits are so hide-bound and class-stratified so that many hate their country. I remember being in a pub in the East End years ago and this was brought to my attention.
Driving past Parliament years ago, I commented on the statue of Cromwell. The cabbie jumped all over me and declared me to be a royalist! Cromwell is a person who never would be recognized in America, but he is beloved among many in Britain. He was a military dictator to Americans, but the symbol of the striving of the lower classes in Britain.
I pondered this lesson for the last several decades, and I conclude that it is true that we are two peoples separated by a common language!

 | abichara (60) 07/03/2006 | Americans do have some sentimentalism about the country and its symbols. That's why we debate issues like whether we should permit flag burning or even whether we should allow the National Anthem to be sung in Spanish. Granted, these are wedge issues, but note how much passion it elicits on either side of the debate. Then again, issues of nationality always engender emotional reactions. It really comes down to a question of identity in the final analysis. Humans have a need to find definition in symbols; hence why there's plenty of sentimentalism around issues like the flag, the concept of the homeland, etc.

 | hotel283 (20) 07/01/2006 | It does get a bit preachy but I just watched a disappointing World Cup game today and was regailed from start to finish with the strains of "God Save the Queen" and "Rule Brittania"

 | Djahuti (54) 06/25/2006 | Too bad most of those people singing songs and waving the flag are totally unruffled about the fact that the current administration is out to gut the constitution and bill of rights that give any REAL MEANING to the symbols they are so fond of.

 | Pretty Buffy (0) 06/22/2005 | Europe should open it's arms to all the progressive Americans yearning to be world citizens and let them emigrate. The rest of us will carry on as usual. Then Democrats can be Democrats again and not be ashamed of what the bloggers have done to the party.

 | bluelines (0) 05/23/2005 | I do find it irritating when people go on about how incredible their country is when they haven't even bothered to find out if what they've been told is true. Some of you say that the US gives trillions of pounds to other countries in aid. America only gives a tiny percentage of its GDP in aid,(it could afford to give a lot more), and countries that aren't so rich give a much higher percentage. All I'm saying is that I think that people should at least be properly aware of what they are saluting to.

 | kissthecook (8) 05/19/2005 | Special flag is right and at least we are proud to sing about our country. Apparantly you are lacking in the pride area, so you felt that you had to come and poke fun at our pride. Does this item make anybody else want to start singing Proud to be an American or is it just me?

 | cutegurl (15) 05/19/2005 | Right, shame on us since America was the one that has gotten every other country in the world out of their sticky situations, the one to bring democracy to the modern world, house some of the world's most important iventors and inventions, and give millions upon millions to the poor and needy all over the world. Shame on us that we should celebrate what our country is about through a very influential art form. Shame that we should celebrate that admirable qualities of our country and celebrate our heritage. What in the world were we thinking? Why do we think we have a right to celebrate what were about? (I beg you note the massive amount of sarcasm.)

 | dpostoskie (7) 05/19/2005 | Yes, most Americans are very proud, even though there is little to be proud of these days. Its the cowboy mentality, the Im better than you approach at the rest of the world because we spend money foolishly and get whatever we want. As long as the individual person is happy, F the rest! Its sad really, but its absolutely 100% true. Most people have no idea whats going on or just how bad our government is selling them out. No, they are just proud to walk around wearing all their made in china gear. Who cares that some slave in a Communist country made it for them. (FYI - not all Americans are as uneducated as the previous rater on this page....or maybe it's just laziness, it's tough to hit that 'shift' key sometimes)

 | CastleBee (81) 05/19/2005 | Well, God Save the Queen and Rule Britannia! Now, wouldn't we be a bunch of emotionless dullards if we weren't inspired to express our love of country once in awhile through music? Its not as if were the ONLY ones, now is it?

 | Mr.Political (18) 05/18/2005 | So what's wrong with being patriotic? America has managed to overcome a tremendous amount of obstacles and problems in a much shorter time span than many of it's predecessors by way of being the world leader. Don't get me wrong, many other countries have accomplished very notable and dignified progressions. But don't blame us for being content with our achievements and showing it...everyone else has that same chance.

 | MissPackRat4Jesus (38) 05/18/2005 | Hey, I don't think it's bad at all to be patriotic. So, what's wrong with making songs about it? The U.S. isn't perfect, but I still love my country!

 | earthbound (37) 05/18/2005 | Hmm..I grew up in Ireland. Everyone I knew was white. Everyone could speak a little Irish from school days. Everyone was Catholic. I imagined that I could even spot the difference between Irish and English people if I saw them in the street together.... What I am saying is that there was a sense of being Irish which did not really require any symbols like shamrocks or tricolours to reinforce it. There was a cultural common denominator there. The USA is a multi-ethnic society, a new country in relative terms, and this cultural sense of togetherness does not exist in the same way. This is one reason, I think, why the flag and the pledge and so on play such a big role here. It is a symbol and reminder of the unity of the nation, e pluribus unum...

 | Mad Hatter (37) 05/18/2005 | Pride in your country is not just in America but is definetly noticable here. There is nothing wrong in having pride in your homeland or your country's flag, weather it be the Old Glory or the Union Jack.

 | Randyman (103) 05/18/2005 | PRIDE? you better believe we have pride! And we won't apoligize for it either. But then we must be doing something right because people from all corners of the planet are clamoring to get in. I don't see too many Americans trying to escape the USA. Why do you think that is? Do I get a sense of national envy from this weblist? Yes, I do. Is that because your country doesn't have much to be proud of? I don't know because I don't pay too much attention to your country. But apparently you're paying attention to ours.

 | irishgit (138) 05/18/2005 | I can get tired of it, but I can get equally tired of pretentious Britons yearning for a lost Empire, or any other overweeningly prideful nationalist. Once again, not a trait unique to America.

 | texasyankee (21) 05/18/2005 | Nah america has absolutely nothing to be proud of. Just because our fore-fathers introduced a change in politics and laws that the whole world, except for a very few have taken into their own countries. Just because we have and had some of the best scientists that invented some very important and useful items and methods for the world. Just because we have been a place who took in refugees from all over to save them from the wars and politics in their countries. Nah we don't deserve any pride. Just because we went to other countries to help them with their own economy, we totally suck because it was totally self- serving. I guess because of all the false stereotypes of our country, that we should start believing it too.

 | Jed1000 (72) 05/18/2005 | I'll grant you this one. That stuff does go over the top at times. It's probably a reaction to being scorned and villified all over the world of late. We have to remind ourselves that we're not so bad.. in spite of what the rest of you might think.
