Operated from 1960 to 1969. The relatively successful league featured exciting and high scoring games from luminaries like Marion Motley, Lance Alworth, Fred Biletnikoff, John Hadl, and Darryl Lamonica. Made history when Joe Namath and the Jets upended the invincible Colts of the NFL in Super Bowl III. The AFL merged with the NFL in 1970, to become the AFC (while adding the Steelers, Colts, and Browns in a lottery drawing to see which original NFL teams would joint the AFC to balance out the conferences).
