 | edt4 (99) 03/17/2008 | I saw it awhile ago when it first came out (I think I was staying in a Canada hotel at the time), and I remember thinking at the time that it wasn't going to join my pantheon of horror greats, but it wasn't a terrible movie either. There were actually some attempts to enliven a moribund "werewolf" mythology, some of which worked and some which didn't, but give the film-makers some credit for at least trying to be different. It wasn't "The Howling" and it's not a movie I feel compelled to see again (which is how my personal favorites can be gauged; if I decide to see it again, it meant I really liked it, or at least liked some aspect of it.), but it had its moments. I particularly liked James Spader as the evil WASP werewolf. Actually, thinking about it again, I might decide to see it again just for Spader's role. I remember not liking the ending, and I didn't think Nicholson was particularly memorable, but, in fairness to him, he's playing a werewolf here, not Randall McMurphy. Michelle Pfeifer is that true rarity in Hollywood; an exquisite beauty who actually knows how to act. Truth is, when I first saw Pfeifer in "Scarface" way back when she made no particular impression on me, but the older she gets, the more magnetic she becomes.
