1746 Culloden 5

Today is April 16, and on this date in history, in 1746, we witness the Battle of Culloden, fought near Inverness, in the Scottish Highlands.  This was the last battle fought on the Island of Britain.  King George's son, William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, was the government commander, and Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie," Prince of Wales, son of King James III & VIII, was the Jacobite commander.

In this battle the government troops, representing the Hanoverian Dynasty, with King George II, on the throne, defeated the Jacobite forces who favored King James III & VIII.

The battle was decisive and the remnants of the miserable Hanoverian Dynasty still romp around London in the personages of Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William and the other members of the royal thundering herd.

After the battle the Hanoverians did a little genocide by forbidding highland dress, language, custom and the clansmen were ruthlessly dispossessed of the land.  Canada and the USA gained greatly from this slaughter as thousands emigrated.

The wikipedia artlicle on the battle is quite extensive and someone who loves the battle did a lot of work on the article.  Hit the link to read all about it.

If I can find it, I'll repost the "Ghosts of Culloden" that I found on You Tube back on my profile page from time to time.

I make no bones about being a Jacobite, and I will always favor the White Cockade and the White Rose until the day I die.
