Today is May 29, and on this date in history, in 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks ending the Roman Empire that had lasted almost 1500 years. This started the reign of terror and Mohammedan darkness in Central Europe and the Balkans for the next two hundred years or so until Prince Eugene administered a series of defeats on the Turks that drove them out of Hungary at the end of the 17th and the early 18th Century. The Turkish monstrosity persisted in parts of the Balkans until the early 20th Century. Such was the long term effects of this historical event.
This day is a dark day for the West although the Eastern Roman Empire was a shadow of its former glory by the time of the Fall of Constantinople.
One good thing to come out of this incident is that many scholars fled to the West to give learning a boost there just before the flowering of the Renaissance.
