Today is May 31, and on this date in history we witness the Battle of Jutland fought in the North Sea near Denmark between the British and German navies. This battle is the largest naval battle of history. The British forces suffered greater losses, but the German fleet returned to port. The battle was tactically inconclusive but important since it bottled up the expensive German fleet and left the surface of the seas in British hands.
I realize that my view is not the sole view of the results of this battle, but I contend that the iron verdict of history in retrospect justifies this view.
Ironically, the naval race was one of the factors leading to WWI and when the time came to use the weapons, they resulted in stalemate.
Almost 250 ships were in the battle.
