1704 Blenheim 5

Yesterday was August 13, and on that date in history, in 1704, the Army of the Grand Alliance, mainly Great Britain, Hollan and Austria, commanded by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and François-Eugène, Prince of Savoy-Carignan (Prince Eugene), won the Battle of Blenheim, against the Army of France and Bavaria, in the War of the Spanish Succession, in Bavaria, in southern Germany.

This decisive battle changed the course of history. It ended the expansionist policy of French King, Louis XIV, who was on the way to dominating Europe. The map of Europe would have looked entirely different if Louis could have proceeded under his plan. Much of what is now Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and maybe even Spain, indeed most of Western Europe, would be part of France.

Many historians have expounded on the effects and consequences of this mighty battle.
