 | GenghisTheHun (177) 10/17/2006 | Today is October 17. On this date in history, 1777, we witness the surrender of the British forces under General John Burgoyne in what is now New York State. He surrendered to General Horation Gates and the American Army during the War of the American Revolution.
Burgoyne's British army was invading from Canada with the intent to cut the revolting colonies in two. Burgoyne's forces met with a series of defeats and finally had to surrender.
Saratoga is in fact a series of battles that wore down the British causing the surrender.
Probably if you were to choose five dates in history important to America, this would be one of the dates. Because of the American victory at Saratoga, France became an ally. The French provided the money, ships and troops to push the American cause on to victory and independence.
