 | GenghisTheHun (177) 09/02/2006 | Today is September 2. On this day in history, after the Battle of Marathon, in 490 B. C., where the Greeks defeated the invading Persians, Phidippides, who had already ran 140 miles over 2 days and 2 nights ran twenty-six miles from Marathon to Athens to carry the message of victory.
His last words before he collapsed and died were, "Rejoice, we are victorious."
That is the reason modern marathon races are twenty-six miles long.
