Stupid Varus. His loss kept the Romans out of Germany and contributed to the further decline of Rome.

This is absolutely one of the decisive battles in world history. German tribesmen ambused and destoryed a Roman army in Westphalia east of the Rhine River in Germany. Arminius or Herrmann was the German leader who defeated Varus, Roman Commander. (There is a huge statue of Herrmann at New Ulm, Minnesota.) Rome never was able to restore the lost legions and Germany was never conquered and Romanized. Think of the consequences of several hundred years of Roman cities, Roman roads, Roman civilization on Germany. What would Germany be today? Would we have had all the wars involving Germany if Varus had triumphed?
