This was an important battle as Britain had to be supplied by sea. It didn't have enough food or munitions that could be grown or produced locally.
What is remarkable about this battle is the obtuse attitude of the air force types. Diverting a few long range bombers to search for subs on the North Atlantic would have ended this battle at an early date. Instead, the air marshals had the clout and the will to hog all the airplanes to bomb Germany which as a project was waste when you compare the results to the effort.
Finally the high command woke up, enough planes were diverted and the subs were vanquished. The American flyboys were as bad as the Brits. Both thought they could win the war by bombing. This attitude still exists today.
