Personally, I prefer the explanations given in The Saga of Gilgamesh, or the Canterbury Tales, but to each their own.

The same way one could use the Greek Myths, the Baghvad Gita,The Koran,The Upanishads,The Tao Te Ching,Al Liber Vel Legis or any number of literary creations to explain it.

OK, let's play some assuming game: 1. If the Bible is true (and I believe it is) then how could John the revelator not have seen any hint of the greatest power in the world history, namely, the Unites States? Hence, the Book of Revelation is not accurate or complete. 2. If the Bible is true (and I believe it is) then evidently the Unites States, the biggest power in the world today, is not mentioned. And if it's not mentioned is because at a certain point in time, the United States will cease to be a major power in the world. Pretty simple to do with a well placed and detonated Electro Magnetic Pulse nuclear device above continental U.S. which will take us back into the middle ages in a fraction of a second. The powers that would rather not have the U.S. involved militarily in the Middle East when the other nations of the world would go against Israel have the technology to make it happen. 3. Yes, there have always been wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes and other natural disasters during all of history. But never on a scale, intensity and destructive power as in our days. Never in history mankind had the potential and power to exterminate all life on the planet several times over. Never before there was such a chronologically concentrated number of earthquakes as in our times. The cyclical global warming is causing natural phenomenons like el Niño, la Niña, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, winter storms, as never before. Never was mankind capable of creating famine, pestilence and diseases at the scale our current technology can create. And things are not getting better. On the contrary, they are getting worse. Never in mankind history there was such a worldwide rejection and rebellion against God and His Word. Morality and ethics are being exterminated and replaced with man made philosophies of life that divide us and makes enemies even among members of our own families. Can anyone doubt about where all this is taking us?

I used to hear a call in talk show on local radio, and there was a local "pastor" of a tiny church who called in constantly. He always stated that the Bible predicted this, that, and the other thing. I wish I would have had the inclination to call in to ask him the passages and verses that made all these predictions, and then, better, yet, ask him what is going to happen next week. I put these prophetic holy rollers on the same level as psychics, Nostradamus adepts, and fortune tellers.

Don't use the Bible to explain current events. Use your intelligence.

Reading prophesy is like reading next week's headlines. You know, at least on some level, what's coming down. You may not know when or exact details, but, when you see things on the news, you can sometimes pinpoint it in The Word. Many of Jesus' students, back in the days, wanted to see what we have an opportunity to, right now. A shame, so many people are missing it anyway.

Gentle Jude, you can apply those events (wars, earthquakes, "false prophets") to almost any point in time. There have always been wars, there have always been earthquakes, and there have always been snake oil salesmen out for a buck. As for the negetive elements of human nature (arrogance, disobiedience, ungratefulness, slanderous, unforgiving, cruel, etc) people have also always been that way in the past (again the holocaust, African slaves in America)

You really need common sense to do this. Because eg in Matthew, Jesus prophesises that the love of many will grow cold, there will be wars and rumours of wars, there will be earthquakes, but this is the beginning of birth pains, and the end is yet to come. And in 2Timothy chapter 3, the Spirit reveals to Paul what will happen in the last days, and it is actually very sad; People will be lovers of themselves ie up themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud (and arrogant), abusive (swearing, violent, frightening each other), disobedient to their parents, ungrateful (nothing is good enough for them, they never appreciate you), unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous (spreading gossip and rumours, even falsely), without self-control, brutal (extremely violent), haters of good (ie they love evilness and see it as being powerful), rude, lovers of pleasure rather then lovers of God, they will be manipulative etc. The scary thing is, that Paul is right. That is exactly what is happening these days, and it is getting worse. There are wars and rumours of wars (in Iraq), earthquakes (the Tsunami in the Islands near Bali), there are false prophets (some of the TV evangelists, who are lovers of money). All as you need is common sense and the ability to be able to relate what is in the Word to what is happening to today.
