UPDATE: I meant to write about this yesterday but put it aside and note it one day late. Yesterday was March 28, and on that date in history, 1862, we witnessed the last day of the
Battle of Glorieta Pass in New Mexico in the American Civil War.
ORIGINAL COMMENT: Canby was a West Point graduate and worked his way up the chain of command.
He defended New Mexico against the Confederate invasion and won the decisive battle of Glorieta Pass ensuring the area for the Union. The Texans invaded New Mexico expecting a general rising. The Hispanic population, however, stood by the Union, and the Texans finally had to flee back home, abandoning El Paso. Glorieta Pass held the mountain territories for the Union.
After the war he fought in the Indian Wars, and was the only general killed in the Indian Wars.
