 | callitdowntheline75 (51) 09/29/2005 | If being a great military leader and tactician are necessary during times of crisis, Fleet Admiral Chester William Nimitz was the epitomy of these virtues. A born-leader of men, Nimitz became Commander-In-Chief of the Pacific Fleet (CINCPAC) in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack. And with a brilliant cast, which included Admirals Raymond Spruance and William "Bull" Halsey, Nimitz devised a strategy of island hopping to halt the Imperial Japanese takeover of the Pacific during World War II. It was through his brilliance, courage and cunning that the Imperial Japanese Navy, led by Admiral Isoroko Yamamoto, was forced to go on the counteroffensive as the Pacific campaign wore on. Through this effort, Japan eventually became desperate and resorted to kamakazi attacks. No matter, Imperial Japan was defeated- and it was only appropriate that Admiral Nimitz would preside and personally represent the United States at the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri in September, 1945. Modest and forthright, he never really sought any attention and retired to his beloved Texas a few short years later.
