Cultural diversity, lots of majestic trees and parks (especially in the older neighborhoods), a thriving arts community and many turn of the century neo-classical buildings make it a much more interesting place to be versus other Western Canadian cities!

I spent EIGHT days in Winnipeg on a whim. Yes, I vacationed there...and had a blast. That's primarily because I met some wonderful people who kept me company and were happy to show off their town. Ok, this isn't a vacation hot spot, but I kept myself quite busy by going to a minor league baseball game, visiting the riverfront park, driving up to Gimli and learning about its icelandic heritage, driving out to sonia's for one of their delicous burgers, eating in their many ethnic restaurants (I was surprised at Winnipeg's ethnic diversity), spent an evening strolling through Little Italy...

I was really impressed by how friendly everyone was. My midwestern accent gave me away as a foreigner and the hospitality was overwhelming.

The negatives: Definite tension with the aboriginal population. Architecture is boring, bland, with the exception of the bridge, which is cool. Upon arrival, the appearance of the city had me worried that it was going to be a long stay. Looked kind of desolate on a Sunday afternoon. The aboriginal museum was closed during hours that were advertised as being open. The French Quarter - oh, my...the walking tour was probably the biggest disappointment of all...there's really not enough there to make it a tour. Ok...I've been to New Orleans, so maybe I had a different expectation...

So cold for six months of the year that even the natives call it Winterpeg.

A wretched, dusty, dirty, windy toilet that has two excellent features: The highway leading west, and the highway leading east.

Let's be clear. This burg was founded because of the fur-trade. That industry's doing about as well as this joint.

Winnipeg has a serious problem with youth crime, and a very high vehicle theft rate. There is little being done by the legal system to counteract it. Other than that, it is a very nice city in the summer.

Winnepeg is a great place to visit and you can have a good time. Try to go there during the Folklorama in the summer.

This is a terrible city. I moved there from Montreal and lived there for 8 years before moving to Toronto and hated all 8 years of it. I met some great people but in general, the city atmosphere sucks, the night life is a joke (you feel like a hick when going out to the bars there), I think that downtown Winnipeg was an experiment gone bad, there is no sense of a cosmopolitan life, and compared to other Canadian cities, I find that the crime rate, especially the per capita homicide rate is very and there is a lot of poverty for a city of less than a million people. I will never go back to this city ever again.

The only redeeming thing about Winnipeg is that it gave birth to the Crash Test Dummies and the Guess Who. Otherwise its a Milwaukee without the water and a lot colder.

Winnepeg, Manitoba is a great, clean little city that tons of historical value. Even though I would never want to live here, I still find it an interesting place. I was so fascinated by the cleanliness of it all. Manitoba in general is so clean. Hopefully it always stays that way...

Have lived there, have visited many times. It really is a fine city. Compares well with Edmonton, Calgary (except for the proximity to the mountains!). The ball park is great, the forks are nice, Assiniboine park is terrific. Lots of good festivals, etc, and very good shopping! I would move back in a second. Hey aflx - I hear your point, but does that mean WPG deserves a 'terrible' rating - that seems very harsh and unjustified.

Winnipeg is a beautiful city. with lots of interesting tourist of attractions such as the forks which draws 5 million visitors a year. what is now winnipeg was first started as Upper Fort Garry (settled in 1738 as a fur trading post)evidences of this is Lower fort garry (there were 2 fort garrys) lower being down the red river from winnipeg and is North Americas only fur trading post still intact. but became the city of winnipeg in about 1870. winnipeg is also home of a famous disney charicter Winnie (short for winnipeg) The Pooh. winnipeg as said in the "about winnipeg, canada" area is indead graced with elm trees. on those streets u litterally cant see the sky above u and is very beautiful. Winnipeg is located in southeast corner in the very beautiful manitoba which has the praires in south and even has a little desert in the western part of the province. on the east is the very very beautiful White Shell provincial part which located in the Canadian shield a very very very old peice of rock covering a very large portion of canada. The whiteshell is very hilly and contains forest and lakes the biggest being Falcon lake which was formed by a large meteor the central part of manitoba is all forest and lakes. the nortern part of manitoba is lakes and tundra. and has churchill (located on hudson bay) which famous for its tours of wild polar bears. Manitobas nick name is the Postage Stamp province due to the fact the original manitoba was square and manitoba also contains 100,000 lakes.

lived here all my life. great city. alot of historic stuff like forts from the fur trade era. and the exchange district covering some 20-30 city blocks all buildings in the area are 80-100+ years old. traffic is mediocre. no freeways but tonnes of potholes. home to 3 sports teams the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Canadian Football league) the Manitoba Moose (American Hockey league) and The Winnipeg Goldeyes (Northern League Baseball) and former home of the NHL's Winnipeg jets (now phoenix coyotes) summer is the best time to visit as that is when its the hottest and when the city looks beutiful but bring lots of mosquito spray as we have a huge mosquito problem. winters are very cold with temperatures around -25C (-13F). if u like to party winnipeg is the place with tonnes of night clubs and big festives like the winnipeg folk festival and folklorama (the worlds biggest multicultural festival) the fringe festival and spirit fest (hosted downtown at canadas most famous intersection of portage and main for a weekend) and Festival Du Voyageur (western canada's largest winter festival. winnipeg is located in the praries and is somewhat isolated as the closest big city is Minneapolis 7 hours south.

There really is nothing to see here that you can't see elsewhere in the United States and Canada. There's much more to do in nearby Minneapolis and St. Paul... really, I've been here a number of times and I can't say that there's been anything that's really caught my fancy. I certainly wouldn't rank it among North American destinations... or even among Canadian destinations.
