He was great in A Thousand Clowns as the free spirited live by his own rules uncle Murray nice change of pace role for him. good as the dad of four grown kids in Parenthood. also liked him as the bitter dad who did not want a Christmas Tree in the TV movie the House without a Christmas Tree. have seen him in many roles usually more serious ones.He can handle any kind of role.

He appeared in a ton of television and theater films. He won the Oscar. I think his best performance is in Peckinpah's "The Ballad of Cable Hogue." He usually played a gritty character and was a joy to watch.
