 | ma duron (62) 10/12/2005 | Byron Janis' remarkable artistry cannot go unacknowledged. Important recordings of his from the 1950s and the early 1960s include Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 3, with conductors Fritz Reiner with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and with Charles Much and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, respectively (RCA 09026-68762-2, 1957).
Janis again recorded Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto in 1961, under conductor Antal Dorati with the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1960, he recorded the Concerto No. 2, also under Dorati with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (both in Mercury 432-759-2). Also for Mercury, under Kyryl Kondrashin with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, there was the Rachmaninoff First and Prokofiev's bravura Piano Concerto No. 3, with Robert Schumann's 'Clara Wieck Variations' (Mercury 434 333-2). A talent whose absence from the studios and the concert hall has fortunately come to an end.
