Please, he said this with all the authenticity of a defense attorney who knew that he was representing a guilty client. Knowing his history, it didn't surprise me that he did lie. Although I don't think that it should have never gotten to the point that it did.

I think the best part was that he was able to say it with a straight face.

A lie, plain and simple. Stupid, perhaps. I doubt, however, that any other man when confronted with a personal issue in a public forum would've been so quick to acknowledge the affair. A more apt place for this item would be under a list entitled Politicians (both Democrats and Republican) DO Stupid Things.

Now that was just a lie. I lived in Europe at the time, and we watched with a mixture of horror and fascination as a large portion of the American people hounded their political leader over a sexual liaison. In Europe, generally nobody cares about crap like this as long as the politicians get their job done. In fact, this sort of carry-on is no great surprise with politicians. But I do think he was an b*stard to betray his family and to lie about it. It must have been hard on his family.**One point of clarification: At the risk of speaking for too many people, I think that what many Europeans found strange was not that the president should be berated for lying, but the fact that he was hounded to that extent about his sexual liaisons to begin with - that so much money ($47 million budget, I believe?) went into these investigations of Kenneth Starr's. And later investigations revealed that other men, some of them politicians, have had adultery aswell and lied about it. Oh and I did not say anything about Europeans being smarter. That was EO. Thanks, comrade ;-)

I don't find this a dumb thing to say. Actually, I thought this was a very smart (although risky) strategy, as long as Clinton could count on the press to take it, run with it and embarrass the anti-clinton forces into abandoning their inquiry. Unfortunately, Janet Reno didn't get the memo and fire Ken Starr. I don't care what a president (or any politician) is lying about, it's wrong. It was wrong when Nixon did it, it was wrong when Johnson did it, it was just as wrong when Reagan did it and when Slick Willie did it, he (also) learned that facts are stubborn things. When you get caught in a lie, open up and take your medicine, junior. There, now, was it worth it? Our smarter brothers across the pond laugh it off like it doesn't matter? Well, we should be more like them. No wonder socialism flourishes there.

I did not have sexual relations with that woman. -- Yeah, I know, it's all a vast, right wing conspiracy.
