Maybe the smog got a little too thick.

He lived about 3 hours away from California's southern tip. It's believable that his parents took him out there when he was a kid. He probably wasn't ignorant of the geographical difference, so the only real problem with the statement is overstating his connection to the entire state of California.

Well, he's mostly right. Arizona is filling up with Californians fleeing the coming disaster.

Not a huge slip; Phoenix is also in the southwest with climate very similiar to the Palm Springs region of So. Cal. Still, liberal media reps must've had a field day with this one.

Well, his distance from Los Angeles would explain how he has kept fond memories of the Golden State in his heart.

I've had some great times in Phoenix, California myself. It's a heck of a town.

That is good for him if he loves California. Just because you grow up in a place eg Phoenix, doesn't mean you will necessarily love it.

Dumb. . .but it's not even close to some of the Mount-Everest heights of Quayle stupidity.

Considering some of the things this clown said, this item is relatively minor.

Another thing that isn't really stupid, it just sounds a bit odd on it's own. Pheonix isn't that far from California, so he probably traveled there from time to time. It would have helped if he added that part.
