too bad that Hillbillies are so stereotyped in movies and television. where they are portrayed in a mostly negative way. not fair. really should not knock a group until you know them and I am sure they are not what is seen in movies and TV.

In my travels, this is the singularly most warm and friendly sector of humanity that I have ever met and I haven't exactly led a sheltered life. Once, on my bike, somewhere in the hills of Virginia, I pulled into a gas station to fill 'er up. By the time I had it full, I had received an invitation to join the attendant's family for dinner, which I accepted. I guess "Deliverance" has stigmatized city slickers to some extent...but I faced my fears and had a wonderful time. Their love for music, folklore and art is paramount and they have their share of impressarios on all accounts. Great people.

Assuming this item was meant to encompass all (or nearly all) southerners, may I suggest a book on the subject by Roy Blount Jr.?

Personally, I think it's a silly stereotype. Just because a person happens to be from the rural Southern United States, it doesn't mean that person is dumb or unsophisticated. I'm sure that some of these supposed "hillbillies" have their own choice words to stereotype people in other regions. At any rate, decent (and yes, intelligent) people are found in the South, as well as in the North, East, and West.

Lots of people come from Appalachia, Ozarks and other highland, rural areas. This group has had an great impact on music, speech, and to some extent dress.
