My parents taught me to embrace their native culture (Filipino), but to also be proud to be an American (they always remind me that America is still the greatest country in the world- and they are RIGHT!!!). In any case, I am very proud to be Filipino American. As far as our success and/or prosperity- I think we're making huge strides. Like any other ethnic and cultural group, however, we can always do better.

Go to Hawaii or some places on the West Coast. Philipinos are everywhere. I stopped in the Airport in Salt Lake City about 30 years ago and sent out a search party to find a bar. I finally found the place. I got tired of buying the little bottles next door to bring into the bar to mix your drink (that was the Mormon's method of annoying you) and switched to beer. The bartender was a beautiful Philpina, and that was how I first drank a whole bunch of San Miguel Beer!

One of my many roomates in the Marines was a crazy Filipino named Medina. He was hilarious and one of the best Marines I knew in my time. One time in the field he took camo paint too seriously and painted his tongue black.

Dying to be Americans. People still on the islands would love to be here. Many who are here are thrilled at their good fortune. Like most Southeast Asians, they have not enjoyed the prosperity/success of many Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. On a personal note, I've never met a Flip I didn't like.
